The Nike Wildhorse has always been a shoe which could cope brilliantly with rough, rugged terrain and has formed a loyal following amongst trail runners. Designed with durability in mind, it’s the ideal companion when dealing with a broad and varied mix of terrain, encompassing both the hard-packed stuff and places where the going underfoot is broken and rocky. The Wildhorse 8 has benefitted from some great updates from previous versions. The React foam midsole still feels nicely responsive (and surprisingly stable) on firmer terrain while the addition of a rock plate in the heel section ensures the shoe feels incredibly protective on rocky terrain. The more traditionally-shaped upper (in comparison to the bootee-styled Wildhorse 7 upper) is reinforced in all the key areas to provide all the protection needed from loose stones and other trail debris. A mix of rubber compounds on the outsole optimises durability in high-wear areas and traction in slippery conditions. If a no-nonsense lightweight trail shoe which deals with mixed terrain is what you’re after, then cast your eye over the Wildhorse 8! Alternatively if you're looking for a door-to-trail option to transition seamlessly from road to trail running, check out the Nike Pegasus Trail series.
