Hoka One One, pronounced O-nay O-nay and meaning ‘fly over the earth’, originated in Annecy, France in 2009. Jean-Luc Diard and Nicolas Mermoud, co-founders of Hoka, started making shoes with the aim of reducing the difficulty of long-distance trail and downhill running, but their research also led to the development of highly protective road running shoes.
