Our take on the best shoes for HYROX

The question "What are the best HYROX shoes?" has become a hot topic as HYROX racing continues to grow in popularity. With its unique blend of running and functional fitness, athletes are searching for shoes that can handle the demands of both. While there isn’t one "best" HYROX shoe, several running shoes stand out for their ability to perform well across the various stations of the competition and, obviously, the running sections.

It is widely recognized that gym shoes or lifting shoes are not suitable for the running sections, as they lack the cushioning and support needed for comfort throughout the duration of the event.

In this article, we’ll help you choose the best HYROX shoes by highlighting the key benefits to prioritise, ensuring you find the perfect pair for both your training and race day performance.

Choosing the best HYROX shoes: striking the perfect balance

When selecting the right shoes for HYROX, most athletes will prioritise similar performance features for the workout stations. However, when it comes to the running sections, individual goals and preferences will influence the choice, leading athletes to select different options based on their specific needs.

HYROX stations requirements

To accommodate the dynamic movements across all 8 stations, you’ll typically want shoes that:

  • are lightweight;

  • offer good midsole flexibility, especially at the toes (ideal for movements like the sled push and burpees);

  • provide adequate lateral support (perfect for lunges, sled pulls, and wall balls);

  • have a secure, snug fit around the heel and;

  • feel comfortable to you.

The key difference lies in how individuals prefer to experience the running sections.

How do you want to approach the run sections?

For some, the run sections serve as a recovery phase, so comfort in the form of plush cushioning might be the top priority. For others, it’s all about performance, which means they’ll be looking for shoes that maximizes energy efficiency to keep them strong throughout the race, and minimises their run time.

Not all existing running shoes are suitable for HYROX stations, as they are designed with a running gait in mind, which doesn’t necessarily align with the movements at HYROX stations.

With these factors in mind, we’ve listed 13 running shoes which, in our opinion, are some of the best HYROX shoes.

For a versatile and balanced experience

With their balanced cushioning, these shoes provide the perfect combination of stability and comfort, making them ideal for both targeted HYROX training and races, as well as focused running workouts.

For enhanced performance

The plates and/or foams featured in these options will increase energy economy and make the run sections easy. These shoes are best to use as part of a rotation with other models.

To maximise cushioning and grip

Although these are technically trail running shoes, they’re an excellent choice for HYROX races. The midsole feels plush for running, while providing the required support for the different stations. Most importantly, the grip ensures you maintain solid traction throughout every movement (especially on the sled stations).

Conclusion

Selecting the best HYROX shoes is a personal decision that balances the right features for you. A few Run4It team members have trained and raced with some of the shoes listed above, and while we all typically look for the same features for the stations, personal preference ultimately guides what works best for each individual.

Our shop staff have been advising shoes on an individual basis, regularly introducing models from this list to customers. Whether you're after versatility, enhanced performance, or extra cushioning and grip, the right pair can make all the difference in your HYROX training and race day success. By considering the features that matter most to you, you’ll be set to choose the best HYROX shoes for your needs.
