Social Bite’s Break the Cycle

Join the race to break the cycle of homelessness

Sir Chris Hoy and the homelessness charity Social Bite are challenging the nation to Break the Cycle of homelessness.

One million. Two villages. Two cities.

They’re inviting you to join them as they race to raise £1million to help create two new Social Bite Villages in the UK, aiming to build them in Glasgow and London.

60 miles, 60 days, or 60 minutes of exercise.

Break the Cycle is a charity cycling event taking place on Sunday, 5th September 2021. There are 1,000 places available to join Sir Chris and cycle 60 miles from the Glasgow Velodrome, across Scotland’s central belt and finishing close to the flagship Social Bite Village in Edinburgh.

As well as the live event, the charity is encouraging the nation to take part in virtual challenges to help break the cycle of homelessness. From now until September, you can take part in a physical challenge of your choice and raise funds to help people affected by homelessness.

Why fundraise for this cause?

The Social Bite Village is an innovative, highly supportive community for up to 20 people affected by homelessness at any one time. The purpose of the project is to bring vacant land back into use and to build a village with beautiful prefabricated housing and a community hub. Social Bite, along with its partners Cyrenians, invest in providing tailored support, skills-building and opportunities that enable residents to move on from their situation of homelessness, sustain their own secure tenancies, and build a positive life for themselves.

This fundraising event hopes to raise the funds needed to replicate the Village in two new cities, targeting Glasgow and London. By getting involved, you’ll be helping to provide safe, secure and supported accommodation for those in a situation of homelessness and help them build an independent life.

Where else will funds raised be invested?

As well as raising funds to help build two new Social Bite Villages, funds you raise will also go towards:

Mental health support

The impact of the pandemic on our mental health makes the need for mental health support even more vital, particularly for the homeless community. Social Bite is working with mental health charity SAMH on Break the Cycle with 10% of funds raised supporting their work in this area.

Breaking the cycle of homelessness

Funds raised will also support Social Bite’s wider mission to end homelessness – providing food, employment opportunities and a range of housing projects to really break the cycle of homelessness.
