On Cloudsurfer Next Running Shoes Review

The On Cloudsurfer Next Running Shoes are the brand’s latest model to feature their innovative CloudTec Phase cushioning. As a reminder, CloudTec Phase cushioning collapses in sequence, promoting smoother transitions from heel to toe. The Cloudsurfer Next Running Shoes sit in a silo of On Running Shoes that includes the On Cloudsurfer and On Cloudeclipse Running Shoes. It’s worth noting that the Cloudsurfer Next Running Shoes technically replace the On Cloudgo Running Shoes.

In On’s words, the Cloudsurfer Next are suited to daily miles, short runs, and faster-paced days. On kindly sent us a pair, so we could put them to the test and find out how they perform. This article covers the tech details, how they feel to run in, what they’re best suited to, and how they compare to other On Running Shoes.

  • Men’s Weight: 273 grams
  • Women’s Weight: 230 grams
  • Forefoot Stack Height: 24 mm
  • Rearfoot Stack Height: 30 mm

Midsole construction

As mentioned, the On Cloudsurfer Next midsole features CloudTec Phase technology. The foam is Helion superfoam - which in this case, is designed to deliver an energetic feel. Please note, Helion superfoam is used in lots of On Running Shoes; however, the exact compound and foam density of each shoe is tuned to its desired properties.

Like the Cloudsurfer and Cloudeclipse, the Cloudsurfer Next don’t feature a Speedboard. This should translate into a more forgiving underfoot experience in comparison to On models that do feature a Speedboard - such as the Cloudstratus and Cloudmonster

One of the most notable attributes is the agile forefoot rocker design. This is because this shaping should propel you forward, for a faster and more responsive ride. Hence why On suggests the Cloudsurfer Next Running Shoes are a good option for fast run days.

Upper construction

Taking cues from On’s pinnacle race-day shoes, the Cloudsurfer Next has an ultralight engineered woven upper. It offers a seamless fit, as there’s very little stitching. There’s a relatively substantial amount of padding in the tongue and around the heel collar.

Outsole construction

As the image below shows, there's plenty of outsole rubber.

This should promote good durability levels. The break in outsole rubber in the midfoot section helps keep the weight down.

How does the On Cloudsurfer Next cushioning feel?

The midsole doesn’t feel firm, but it feels very responsive. This propulsive sensation is enhanced by the forefoot rocker design - as this works in harmony with the energetic foam to propel you forward. Naturally, this means the cushioning feels very good as you pick up the pace.

Even though the Cloudsurfer Next aren’t technically that light, the cushioning feels very light under your feet. This means the cushioning feels dynamic and agile.

While the stack height isn’t that high, there’s still a substantial amount of foam under your feet. This means you feel protected, yet connected to the ground. In comparison to the Cloudeclipse and Cloudmonster 2 Running Shoes, you feel a lot more of the road. This makes it easier to pick up the pace, and take corners at speed.

The Cloudsurfer Next are neutral running shoes, so there’s no additional stability on offer. Although, the cushioning feels very stable underfoot. This is probably down to the fact that the cushioning isn’t ultra soft. It’s also fair to say that the CloudTec Phase technology is helping direct forces forward.

What pace of running and distance are they best suited to?

The cushioning is perfect for steady paced runs. It feels very fluid, smooth, and responsive at this intensity. Ultimately making it feel easier to sustain your pace. While the cushioning is probably best suited to shorter to moderate distances - so everyday miles - you could use them for long runs. Particularly if you prefer a more responsive ride.

It’s very surprising how well the Cloudsurfer Next Running Shoes perform at faster paces. Even though there’s no plate, the midsole delivers amazing propulsion at tempo speeds. And, you can even use them for some shorter, faster intervals. We’re not saying they offer as much help as plated super trainers, but they help you run faster. They’re probably one of the best alternatives to plated running shoes for your speed-focused efforts.

You can definitely use the Cloudsurfer Next Running Shoes for easier effort days, you’re just not going to get the most out of them at this intensity. Similarly, as mentioned above, they’re not necessarily the best choice for long distances, as a softer, or higher-stacked midsole is likely to feel more comfortable.

How do they fit?

The On Cloudsurfer Next Running Shoes should suit a wide range of foot shapes. This is because the forefoot isn’t overly wide, but feels accommodating. The midfoot and ankle also offer particularly good lockdown.

It would be very unlucky if they cause you any rubbing, as the fabric feels soft and comfortable. Additionally, there’s virtually no seams, so the chances of friction are minimised.

How do they compare to other On models?

As the Cloudeclipse, Cloudsurfer, and Cloudsurfer Next Running Shoes all feature CloudTec Phase technology, they share certain qualities. For example, they all deliver a very smooth underfoot experience. However, there are distinct differences between each model.

The Cloudsurfer Running Shoes are much softer than the Cloudsurfer Next. And are therefore likely to feel more comfortable on slow run days. As the Cloudsurfer are softer, they lack the responsiveness that the Cloudsurfer Next offer - so don’t feel as good for steadier paced efforts.

The On Cloudeclipse are max-cushioned running shoes, and feel significantly more protective than the Cloudsurfer Next. This means they’re likely to feel much more comfortable during long distance runs.

Summary

The On Cloudsurfer Next Running Shoes feel very agile, responsive, and light on your feet. This means they’re an amazing option for steady daily miles and faster runs. In short, they’re exceptionally versatile. If I was away for a week, and could only take one pair of running shoes with me, it would probably be these.

If you rotate between different models for different runs, the Cloudsurfer Next would have a very clear position in your shoe rotation. On the other hand, if you’re searching for one pair of running shoes that covers all your bases, these could work really well for you.

Finally, while there’s a lot of benefits of running slowly, some people just want to get out there and run; as they only have X amount of time, and enjoy the challenge of pushing themselves each day. The On Cloudsurfer Next Running Shoes should help you push the pace on a daily basis, if that’s your goal.
